2019; EAGLE RIVER, Wis. - Looking to continue to build on a strong week, the Calumet Copper Kings softball team continued their modest winning streak with a 14-2 victory over Northland Pines in Eagle River, Wisconsin, Saturday. The junior varsity team also recorded a victory, 16-1.
The Copper Kings opened strong as Elli Djerf tripled to lead off. Megan Peterson laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring Djerf home. Vera Peterson then homered to put Calumet 2-0 after one inning.
The Eagles cut into that lead with a run in the second inning, making it 2-1. The Copper Kings got the run back in he top of the third when Vera Peterson doubled and was later brought home by a fielder's choice.
Calumet, needing to bear down, did just that in the fourth.
Krista Keranen singled. Molly Helminen followed with a single of her own. Both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch before Molly Larson connected on a single to bring Keranen home. Djerf then doubled to bring Helminen home, making it 5-1.
Still in the third, Megan Peterson hit into a fielder's choice, which brought Larson home. Vera Peterson followed with an RBI double to score Djerf before the Eagles could get out of the inning.
The Eagles again cut into the Copper Kings' lead, bringing the score to 7-2, but that was close as the hosts would get.
Helminen doubled and later scored in the fourth.
In the sixth, Megan Peterson singled and later scored on a single by Laura Giachino. Vera Peterson reached on a fielder's choice and later scored when Keranen reached first on an error. Giachino scored before the inning was over, making it 11-2 after six.
Looking to finish strong, Calumet did just that in the seventh as Elli Djerf homered to open the inning, which gave her the cycle on the day along with earning the victory on the mound.
Megan Peterson tripled to follow Djerf's accomplishment. Vera Peterson cracked a two-run home run to put the game out of reach.
In the junior varsity contest, Calumet struck first when Emma Perala tripled and then later scored on an error.
The Copper Kings added to their lead in the second as Morgan Erkkila walked and later scored. Illa Goulette struck out, but reached first on a passed ball. Kaitlen Newman then walked. Perala then walked to load the bases. Jana Loukus brought all three home a base-clearing double, putting Calumet ahead 5-1.
In the third, Erkkila walked. Taylor Vertin also walked. Goulette then walked to load the bases. All three got home before the third out was recorded, putting the Copper Kings up 8-1.
Loukus got to first on an error in the fourth, setting the ball rolling for Calumet again. Giachino singled. Emily Peterson walked. Erkkila singled to bring two runs home. Emily Peterson and Erkkila both later scored on an error to push the lead to 12-1.
In the fifth, Perala opened with a double. Loukus brought her home with a sacrifice bunt. Giachino singled. Emily Peterson walked, as did Erkkila. Vertin knocked two runs home with a single. Newman singled home the final run.
